Stolen from outside the driver’s home, we received the report of this stolen van early in the morning. The van was likely stolen the previous evening as that’s when the built-in traditional (wired) tracking system was located and disconnected from the vehicle.
Our technology indicated that it was several miles away from the theft location in a private car park proving that, despite the wired-in tracker being removed, our covert unit was still happily relaying accurate location status to our Investigations Unit. Within 15 minutes of receiving this information, our Investigator was on the scene and secured the van.
Closer inspection shows the level of effort the thieves took in trying to find the traditional tracker with most panelling in the cab removed and searched for tracking devices. The thieves had even made light work of the steering wheel lock that was found casually placed in the passenger door bin.
If a thief wants to steal a van, they will. Deterrents such as steering locks may slow them down for a few seconds but ultimately, the thieves we thwart are professionals and, as such know how to disable steering locks with ease.
In previous recoveries, we’ve seen a steering wheel cut to remove the lock. Replacing a steering wheel is relatively cheap in relation to the stolen van worth.
